A WhatsApp forward with a long message as an image, a screenshot of an address, a photo of a notice board, a slide from a lecture: retyping text from pictures is slow and error-prone. Optical character recognition (OCR) can read the text in an image and give it to you as editable text in seconds. This guide shows the quickest ways to copy text from a photo or screenshot on a phone or computer, when to use a dedicated OCR tool, and how to get accurate results.
Quick options built into your phone
For a single sentence or a phone number, the tools already on your phone may be enough:
- Google Lens (Android, and in the Google app on iPhone): open the image, tap Lens, then "Text" to select and copy.
- Live Text (iPhone): in Photos, long-press on text in an image to select and copy it.
- Google Photos: shows a "Copy text" suggestion on images with text.
- Windows Snipping Tool: recent versions include text actions to copy text from a screenshot.
These are great for short snippets. They are less practical for many images at once, long documents, Hindi text with accurate formatting, or when you need the result as a downloadable file.
Using Ocr4you's Image to Text
- Open Image to Text.
- Upload the image: JPG, PNG or another common format. Screenshots work very well because their text is sharp.
- Choose the language of the text. For Hindi or mixed Hindi-English content, select the matching option.
- Start the conversion. The image is processed with OCR on our server.
- Copy the text or download it as a file, then check it against the image.
OCR runs on our server because it needs more computing power than a browser offers. New visitors get 16 free OCR pages; see Pricing for more. Uploaded images are used only to produce your result, as described in the Privacy Policy.
Which tool for which job?
| You haveโฆ | Best option |

| Photos of printed pages to edit later | Image to Text or Convert to Word |
| Photographed table, price list or bill | Convert to Excel |
| Scanned PDF | Scanned PDF to Text |
| Digital PDF where text can be selected | PDF to Text (free, no OCR); see our PDF guide |
| Hindi document | Image to Text with Hindi selected; read Hindi OCR tips |
Getting accurate results
- Use the original image. Images forwarded many times on WhatsApp lose quality. Ask for the original or a screenshot taken on the source device.
- Crop to the text. Remove other parts of the screenshot, like icons and status bars, with Crop Image. OCR is more accurate when it focuses on the text.
- Straighten photos. A photo of a notice taken at an angle produces more errors. Rotate it with Rotate Image, or retake it straight on.
- Good light, no glare. For printed pages, follow the advice in how to scan documents with your phone.
- Large enough text. If the text is tiny in the image, zoom in on the original and take a closer screenshot.
- Correct language. The language setting has a large effect on accuracy.
Checking and cleaning the text
OCR is usually very accurate on clean screenshots, but always proofread:
- Numbers: phone numbers, amounts, account numbers and dates. A single wrong digit matters.
- Similar characters: 0/O, 1/l/I, rn/m, 5/S.
- Line breaks: text from multi-column layouts or chat bubbles may come out with extra line breaks. Join lines in a text editor.
- Emojis and symbols: these are often dropped or misread.
Converting many images at once
If you have several pages, it is more convenient to combine them into a single PDF with JPG to PDF and run Scanned PDF to Text on the whole document. The text comes out in page order, ready to paste into a document.
Respect copyright and privacy
OCR makes it easy to copy text, but the usual rules still apply: do not republish copyrighted books, articles or paid course material without permission, and be careful with screenshots containing other people's personal data or private conversations.
Common questions
Can OCR read handwriting?
Neat handwriting is sometimes recognised, but OCR is designed for printed and on-screen text. Expect to correct handwritten results heavily.
Can I copy text from a video?
Pause the video, take a sharp screenshot of the frame with the text and run OCR on the screenshot.
Will the formatting be preserved?
Image to Text gives plain text. To keep paragraphs, headings and layout for editing, use Convert to Word instead.
Getting the best accuracy
OCR works best when the text is large, sharp and evenly lit. Crop the image to the text area first with Crop Image, so logos and photos do not confuse the recognition. Rotate sideways photos upright with Rotate Image. Screenshots usually give excellent results because the text is digital. Handwriting, decorative fonts and very small print are harder, so always proofread names, numbers and amounts before you reuse the text. For multi-page documents, combine the images into a PDF and use PDF OCR instead.
Keep the original image until you have checked the extracted text, so you can compare any doubtful words.
Summary
Use your phone's built-in tools for quick snippets and a dedicated OCR tool for documents, many images, Hindi text or downloadable output. Crop, straighten, choose the language, then proofread numbers and names.
