WEBP to JPG: How to Convert Web Images So They Open Everywhere

Why images from websites download as WEBP, which apps and forms reject it, and how to convert WEBP to JPG or PNG in bulk, free.

By the Ocr4you Team ·

You right-click an image on a website, save it, and find a .webp file that your photo viewer, an online form or an older version of Photoshop will not open. WEBP has become the default image format on many websites because it makes pages load faster, but it still causes compatibility headaches when you want to reuse an image. This guide explains what WEBP is, where it causes trouble, and how to convert WEBP to JPG or PNG in bulk for free, without uploading your files.

What is WEBP?

WEBP is an image format developed by Google. It supports both lossy compression (like JPG) and lossless compression (like PNG), as well as transparency and animation. At similar visual quality, WEBP files are typically noticeably smaller than JPG or PNG, which is why websites, online shops and content delivery networks serve images as WEBP to save bandwidth and speed up pages.

All modern browsers display WEBP. The problems start when the image leaves the browser.

Where WEBP causes problems

  • Online application forms usually accept only JPG/JPEG, sometimes PNG.
  • Older software such as some versions of Windows Photo Viewer, MS Paint, Office or design tools may not open WEBP.
  • Print shops and kiosks often expect JPG.
  • Some messaging and email apps do not show a preview.
  • Marketplaces and listing sites may reject WEBP uploads for product photos.

Convert WEBP to JPG step by step

  1. Open Image to JPG. It accepts WEBP as well as PNG, GIF, BMP and other formats.
  2. Select one or many WEBP files.
  3. Set the quality. 85–90% is a good default that keeps detail while producing reasonable file sizes.
  4. Convert and download. Multiple files come as a ZIP archive.

The conversion runs in your browser, so the images are not uploaded to any server.

JPG or PNG as the target?

Choose JPG when…Choose PNG when…
The image is a photoThe image has a transparent background (logos, stickers, icons)
A form or site requires JPGThe image is a screenshot, diagram or text graphic with sharp edges
You want a small fileYou will edit it further and want no quality loss

JPG does not support transparency: transparent areas become white (or another background colour). For logos with transparent backgrounds, use Image to PNG. Our PNG vs JPG guide explains the difference in depth.

Animated WEBP

Some WEBP images are animations, like GIFs. Converting to JPG keeps only one frame. If you want an animation in a widely supported format, convert to GIF, or extract individual frames as images. For GIF files, GIF to Images splits an animation into frames and GIF Maker creates one from images.

Saving images as JPG in the first place

  • In Chrome or Edge, some extensions offer "Save image as type" to save directly as JPG or PNG.
  • Taking a screenshot gives you a PNG, which is universal, though usually at screen resolution rather than the original resolution.
  • On a phone, sharing an image from the browser to some apps converts it automatically.

Converting the downloaded WEBP is still the most reliable method, because it keeps the original resolution.

After converting

Going the other way: JPG to WEBP

If you run a website or an online shop, converting your own JPG and PNG images to WEBP can make pages load faster, which improves user experience and can help search rankings. Use Image to WEBP to convert, and Compress WEBP to squeeze them further. Keep the original JPGs for printing and for platforms that do not accept WEBP.

Respect image rights

Being able to download and convert an image from a website does not mean you can reuse it. Product photos, news images and artwork are usually protected by copyright. Use images you own, images with a suitable licence, or ask the owner for permission.

Common questions

Does converting WEBP to JPG reduce quality?

Every lossy conversion loses a little information, but at 85–90% quality the difference is not visible for normal use. The file may become larger than the WEBP, which is expected.

Can I convert hundreds of images?

Yes, select them all at once. Large batches depend on your device's memory; on a phone, convert in groups of 30–50.

Why does my converted image have a black or white background?

The WEBP had transparency, which JPG cannot store. Convert to PNG to keep it.

Summary

WEBP is great for websites but awkward elsewhere. Convert to JPG for photos and forms, to PNG for transparent graphics, compress or resize as needed, and keep originals for future use.
