How to Make a Passport Size Photo Online

Crop and resize a photo to passport size online: background, face position, pixel size and KB, plus how to print several on one sheet.

Studios charge for passport photos, and you often need them in a hurry: for a job application, a college ID card, a SIM card, a bank account or a visa form. With a phone, a plain wall and a few minutes, you can make a correct passport-size photo at home, both as a digital file for online forms and as prints. This guide covers the common photo rules, how to crop and resize online, and how to print several photos on one sheet.

Requirements differ. Indian passport applications, visa applications for other countries, exam forms and ID cards each set their own rules for size, background and file format. A commonly used size in India is 35 ร— 45 mm, and our preset outputs 413 ร— 531 pixels, which corresponds to that size at 300 DPI. Always verify the exact dimensions, background colour and file limits in the official instructions for your application.

Common passport photo rules

Most authorities follow similar guidelines, based on international standards for travel documents:

  • Background: plain white or off-white, without shadows or patterns.
  • Face position: looking straight at the camera, head centred, the face taking up most of the height of the photo (often around 70โ€“80%).
  • Expression: neutral, mouth closed, eyes open and clearly visible.
  • Glasses: many authorities now prefer no glasses, or at least no glare and no tinted lenses.
  • Head covering: generally not allowed except for religious reasons, and the face from chin to forehead must be visible.
  • Recent: taken within the last few months and showing your current appearance.
  • No edits: no beauty filters, no heavy retouching, no changed background colour that looks artificial.

Step 1: Take the photo at home

  1. Stand about half a metre in front of a plain white wall or a white bed sheet hung flat. Standing away from the wall avoids a shadow behind your head.
  2. Face a window for soft daylight. Avoid direct sunlight and overhead lights, which create harsh shadows.
  3. Ask someone to take the photo from about 1.5 metres away at your eye level, using the rear camera. Selfies distort the face and are often rejected.
  4. Take several shots and pick the sharpest one with even lighting and a neutral expression.

Step 2: Crop and resize online

  1. Open Resize Photo for Passport. It works in your phone or computer browser and does not upload your photo.
  2. Select your photo. The crop frame has the passport proportion already set.
  3. Move and zoom the frame so your head is centred, with a little space above the hair and the frame ending around the top of the shoulders.
  4. Download the resized image as JPG.

For custom dimensions or a maximum file size, use Photo & Signature Resize, where you type exact pixel values and a KB limit. If you only need a different crop shape, Crop Image has presets for passport, square and other ratios.

Step 3: Meet the file size limit

Online forms often limit the photo to a size such as 50 KB or 100 KB, but check your form. If your file is too large, compress it with Compress Image to 50 KB or a similar target. Our guide on compressing images to 20 KB or 50 KB explains how to keep the face sharp.

Step 4: Print several photos on one sheet

Most forms and offices want physical copies too. Printing on a full sheet saves money:

  1. Make several copies of your resized photo, then combine them into a grid with Merge Images, leaving a thin white gap between them for cutting.
  2. Alternatively, create an A4 PDF with JPG to PDF, which most print shops prefer, and add several photos per page.
  3. Print on glossy photo paper, or ask a local print shop to print the PDF at "actual size" (100%) without "fit to page", so the size stays correct.
  4. Measure one printed photo with a ruler to confirm the size before cutting them all.

A 4 ร— 6 inch photo print can usually hold several passport-sized photos, which is cheaper than printing a full A4 sheet on photo paper.

Fixing common problems

The background is not white enough

Retake the photo with more light on the wall, or move further from the wall. Avoid apps that replace the background artificially, because the edges around the hair often look fake and can lead to rejection.

My face looks too small or too large

Adjust the crop: zoom in until the head fills most of the frame. If you cannot zoom in enough without blur, take the photo closer.

The photo is sideways after upload

Rotate it with Rotate Image and download again.

The website rejects my iPhone photo

It is probably HEIC. Convert it with HEIC to JPG; see our HEIC guide.

Photos for exams and social media

Exam forms have their own size and KB rules, explained in our SSC, UPSC and railway photo guide. For profile pictures, try WhatsApp DP resize or Crop Circle Image.

Summary

Use daylight and a white wall, have someone else take the photo, crop it with the passport preset, compress it if the form has a KB limit, and print several copies on one sheet. Check the official specification once more before submitting, and keep the original photo for future applications.
