How to Compress an Image to 20KB or 50KB Without Losing Clarity

Reduce a JPG photo or scanned document to under 20 KB or 50 KB for online applications while keeping the face or text clear.

"Image size should be between 10 KB and 50 KB." Anyone who has filled in an online application in India has seen a line like this. Phone photos are typically 2โ€“5 MB, which is up to 500 times larger than allowed. Reducing an image that much while keeping the face or the text clear takes a bit of know-how. This guide explains what determines image file size and how to compress a photo or a scanned document to 20 KB, 50 KB or 100 KB without turning it into a blurry mess.

Use the official requirement. Exams and portals set different limits, sometimes with a minimum as well as a maximum size, and they change them between years. The values in this guide are examples. Check the official notice for your form before preparing your files.

What makes an image file large?

File size depends on three things:

  1. Pixel dimensions. A 12-megapixel phone photo is about 4000 ร— 3000 pixels. A form photo usually needs only a few hundred pixels across. Reducing the dimensions is the most effective way to make a file smaller.
  2. JPG quality. JPG compression throws away detail the eye barely notices. Lowering quality from 95% to 70% often halves the file size with little visible change; going much lower creates blocky artefacts.
  3. Content. Busy backgrounds, noise from low light and fine textures need more data. A plain background compresses far better.

The best results come from first resizing to sensible dimensions and then adjusting quality, not from compressing a huge photo very hard.

Step-by-step: compress to 20 KB or 50 KB

  1. If your photo is HEIC (common on iPhones), convert it first with HEIC to JPG.
  2. Crop away anything that does not need to be in the picture with Crop Image. Less area means fewer pixels.
  3. Open Compress Image to 20 KB or Compress Image to 50 KB. There are also targets for 100 KB and 200 KB.
  4. Select the image. The tool automatically finds the best combination of size and quality to stay under the target, entirely in your browser.
  5. Download and check: open the image and zoom in on the face or the smallest text. Check the file size in your file manager.

If the form also specifies exact pixel dimensions, use Photo & Signature Resize, which sets the pixel size and the maximum KB together. Our photo and signature guide walks through it.

How small can an image get and still look good?

ContentTypical result at 20 KBTypical result at 50 KB
Passport-style photo (head and shoulders)Good at small dimensionsVery good
Signature on white paperVery goodExcellent
One page of printed textReadable in greyscale, small print may blurReadable
Colour certificate with seal and photoOften too blurryUsually readable

Documents with lots of text compress better as greyscale. If the portal accepts PDF for documents, a PDF is often clearer at the same size; see compressing PDFs to 100 KB or 200 KB.

Tips for sharper results at small sizes

  • Start with a good photo. Daylight, a plain background and a steady hand make the biggest difference. Noise from a dark room eats file size.
  • Avoid WhatsApp copies. A photo sent through WhatsApp has already been compressed once. Use the original from your gallery.
  • Do not compress twice. Each JPG save loses detail. Go from the original straight to the final size.
  • Choose the right format. JPG is best for photos. PNG is better for screenshots and graphics with flat colours, but usually larger for photos. Forms mostly require JPG anyway.
  • Keep the subject large in the frame. For a face photo, crop so the face fills most of the picture; a small face in a big frame wastes the pixel budget.

Too small? Meeting a minimum size

Some portals reject files below a minimum, for example under 10 KB, because extremely small images are usually unreadable. If your file is too small, increase the pixel dimensions within the allowed range, or use a higher quality setting. Do not add empty borders to inflate the size; that makes the important content smaller.

Compressing images for other uses

The same principles apply beyond forms. For websites, smaller images load faster and improve your Google ranking; consider converting to WEBP, which is smaller than JPG at the same quality. For email attachments, compress batches of photos with Compress Image, which handles many files at once and downloads them as a ZIP. For PNG screenshots, use Compress PNG.

Privacy

All of Ocr4you's image compressors run in your browser. Your photos, signatures and document scans are processed on your device and are not uploaded to our servers, which is important for identity documents.

Summary

  1. Check the official limits, including any minimum size.
  2. Crop, then resize to sensible dimensions.
  3. Compress to the target with a fixed-size tool.
  4. Zoom in and confirm the face or text is clear.
