How to Crop a PDF to Remove Margins and Scan Borders

Trim white margins, dark scan borders or unwanted parts of PDF pages so documents look clean, print larger and take less space.

Cropping a PDF means cutting away part of each page: wide white margins on a downloaded e-book, the black border and table surface around a phone scan, the instruction section around an e-Aadhaar or e-ticket, or the header and footer of a printout. A well-cropped PDF looks cleaner, prints larger and is often smaller in size. This guide explains how to crop PDF pages online, crop one page or all, and avoid cutting off something important.

When cropping helps

  • Phone scans: remove the dark background, fingers and shadows around the page.
  • Reading on a phone: PDFs with large margins become much more readable when cropped, because the text fills the screen.
  • ID documents: keep only the card portion of an e-Aadhaar, e-PAN, e-ticket or certificate.
  • Printing: remove empty areas so the content prints larger, for example a small receipt or a slide.
  • Upload limits: cropped scans contain less image area and can compress to a smaller size.

Step-by-step: crop a PDF

  1. Open Crop PDF on your phone or computer.
  2. Select the PDF. It opens in your browser and is not uploaded.
  3. Drag the crop box over the area you want to keep. Use the handles on the edges and corners to adjust it.
  4. Choose whether to apply the crop to all pages or only to the page shown in the preview.
  5. Check other pages in the preview, especially if the content position varies between pages.
  6. Download the cropped PDF.

Crop one page or all?

For documents with a consistent layout, such as an e-book or a report, applying one crop box to all pages is quick and gives a uniform result. For phone scans, each page sits in a slightly different position. If one box does not suit every page, apply the crop to the preview page only, download, and repeat for the next page that needs a different box; this avoids cutting into the text on some pages. A quick check: after setting the crop on page 1, jump to the last page and a middle page before applying to all.

Leave a safety margin

It is tempting to crop tightly, right up to the text. Leave a small white border instead:

  • Printers cannot print to the very edge of the paper; text right at the edge may be cut off.
  • Verification officers and readers find documents with a little margin easier to read.
  • Stamps, signatures and page numbers often sit near the edges and are easy to cut accidentally.

Cropping scanned documents

Phone scans often need a few fixes at once. A practical order:

  1. Rotate sideways pages with Rotate PDF; see our rotation guide.
  2. Crop the pages to remove the background.
  3. Remove blank pages with Remove PDF Pages.
  4. Compress with Compress PDF or a target such as 500 KB.

If the scan is tilted (not just rotated by 90ยฐ), cropping cannot fully straighten it. Rescan with a scanner mode that corrects perspective, as explained in how to scan documents with your phone.

Does cropping reduce file size?

It depends on the type of PDF and the tool. In many PDFs, cropping sets a new visible area (the "crop box") without deleting the hidden content outside it, so file size barely changes. For scans, the effect on size comes when you compress afterwards, because compression works on the visible page. If file size is your main goal, crop first and then compress. To check what makes a PDF large, see our guide to reducing PDF size.

Is cropped content really gone?

Because cropping may only hide the outer part of a page, it is not a safe way to remove sensitive information. A determined person could restore the hidden area with PDF software. To permanently remove an account number, address or Aadhaar digits, use Redact PDF, which deletes the content under the redaction box. See how to mask your Aadhaar number.

If you need an image of just the cropped area, convert the cropped PDF to an image with PDF to JPG; the image contains only what is visible.

Cropping images instead

If you are working with photos before they become a PDF, crop them as images with Crop Image, which includes presets for passport, square and widescreen ratios. Then convert to PDF with JPG to PDF. This gives you the most control over each page.

Changing page size versus cropping

Cropping reduces the page to the selected area, so a cropped A4 page is no longer A4. If you need a standard page size for printing or submission, it may be better to keep the page size and only remove margins in the source document, or to place cropped images on A4 pages using JPG to PDF with the A4 option.

Common questions

Can I undo a crop?

Keep your original file. Some PDF editors can reset the crop box, but it is simplest to crop again from the original.

Can I crop a password-protected PDF?

Unlock it first with Unlock PDF, crop, and protect it again with Protect PDF if required.

Does cropping affect text quality?

No. The remaining content is not recompressed; text stays sharp and selectable.

Summary

Use Crop PDF to remove backgrounds and margins, crop page by page for scans, leave a small safety margin, and use redaction rather than cropping for anything sensitive. Then compress if you need a smaller file.
