How to Convert a Hindi PDF to Word in Unicode (Free)

Convert a Hindi PDF to an editable Word file in Unicode, even when copied text turns into gibberish from Kruti Dev or other legacy fonts. Free OCR guide.

Converting a Hindi PDF to Word sounds simple until you try it. You copy a paragraph from a government circular, a school question paper or an old book, paste it into Word, and get something like "vklinks dk vkns'k" or a row of boxes instead of clean Devanagari. Or the PDF is a scan and nothing can be selected at all. This guide explains why Hindi PDFs break, and shows how to convert a Hindi PDF to an editable Word document in proper Unicode, for free, using OCR.

Why Hindi text from PDFs comes out as gibberish

There are three common reasons, and each one needs a slightly different fix.

  • Legacy fonts (Kruti Dev, Chanakya, DevLys, Walkman-Chanakya). Many Hindi documents, especially from government offices, courts, coaching institutes and printing presses, were typed in non-Unicode fonts. These fonts draw Hindi letters on top of English keyboard codes. On screen it looks like Hindi, but the actual characters stored are Latin letters, so copying gives nonsense like "dk" for "का".
  • Scanned pages. If the PDF was made with a scanner or a phone camera, each page is only an image. There is no text to copy until OCR reads it.
  • Broken font mapping. Some PDFs embed Unicode fonts but strip the information that maps shapes back to characters. Matras and half letters (like the "र" in "प्र") then come out in the wrong order or go missing.

OCR fixes all three, because it ignores whatever text is hidden in the file and reads the visible Devanagari shapes directly. The result is standard Unicode Hindi that works in Word, Google Docs, WhatsApp, email and any website.

Step by step: Hindi PDF to Word with Ocr4you

  1. Open PDF to Word on Ocr4you in any browser, on a phone or a computer.
  2. Upload the Hindi PDF. Multi-page files are supported.
  3. Select Hindi as the language. If the document mixes Hindi and English, choose Hindi; English words and numbers are usually still recognized.
  4. Click Convert and wait a few seconds per page.
  5. Download the DOCX file and open it in Microsoft Word, WPS Office or Google Docs.
  6. Proofread the text, especially matras, half letters and numbers, before you use it.

If you only need plain text to paste somewhere, PDF to Text is faster. For a single page you have as a photo or screenshot, use Hindi Image to Text.

Converting Kruti Dev text without OCR

If you can select the text and it pastes as English-looking letters, it is almost certainly Kruti Dev or a similar font. You have two choices. You can paste it into a Kruti Dev to Unicode converter, which maps the codes back to Hindi. This works well for clean documents but struggles with mixed fonts, special symbols and text that was edited in different software. Or you can run the page through OCR, which does not care which font was used. For long documents with tables, headers and mixed fonts, OCR is usually the less frustrating route.

How to get accurate Hindi OCR

Devanagari is harder for OCR than English because of the shirorekha (the line on top of words), conjunct letters and matras above and below the line. These tips make a big difference:

  • Use the original PDF, not a photo of the screen. A digital PDF renders sharply; a photo adds blur and glare.
  • Scan at 300 DPI if you are scanning paper. Small Hindi fonts lose their matras at lower resolution.
  • Prefer grayscale or black and white. Coloured backgrounds, stamps and watermarks confuse the reader.
  • Straighten pages. Tilted lines break the shirorekha and split words. Phone scanner apps can auto-crop and deskew; see how to scan documents with your phone.
  • Split huge files. For a 200-page book, convert the chapters you need rather than everything at once.

Common Hindi OCR mistakes to check

  • Look-alike letters: घ and ध, भ and म, ब and व, ड and ङ can be swapped in small or faded print.
  • Matras: छोटी इ (ि) and बड़ी ई (ी), and the anusvara (ं) versus chandrabindu (ँ), are the most frequent errors.
  • Half letters and conjuncts: words like "क्ष", "त्र", "ज्ञ" and "श्र" sometimes split into two letters.
  • Numbers: documents may use Devanagari digits (१, २, ३) or English digits. OCR keeps whichever is printed; use Find and Replace in Word if you need one style.
  • Nukta: letters like ज़ and फ़ may lose the dot.

Word's spell check can help if you install the Hindi proofing language, and Google Docs highlights many Hindi typos automatically.

Keeping the layout in Word

OCR to Word keeps headings, paragraphs and simple lists in most cases. Two-column newspaper layouts, forms with boxes and tables may need manual cleanup. For tables of marks, fees or lists, try JPG to Excel or PDF to Excel instead, and our guide on turning a scanned PDF into editable Word covers layout cleanup step by step.

Typing and editing Hindi in Word after conversion

Once your text is in Unicode, you can edit it with any Hindi keyboard. On Windows, add Hindi from Settings > Time & Language > Language and pick the Hindi Traditional or Inscript keyboard, or install Google Input Tools style phonetic typing. On Android and iPhone, Gboard and the iOS Hindi keyboard support transliteration, so typing "namaste" gives "नमस्ते". Use a Unicode font such as Mangal, Nirmala UI, Noto Sans Devanagari or Kokila so the document displays correctly on every computer.

Other Indian languages

The same method works for Marathi, Nepali and Sanskrit (also written in Devanagari), and for other scripts such as Bengali, Gujarati, Tamil and Telugu, which had their own legacy fonts too. See Marathi Image to Text and our guide to free OCR for Indian languages.
