A 40-page PDF from your college contains all your semester marksheets, but the form wants only the final year. Your bank sent a 12-month statement, but the loan officer asked for three months. A scanned file has blank pages between every sheet. In all these cases you need to take pages out of a PDF. This guide explains the difference between splitting, extracting and removing pages, and how to do each quickly on a phone or computer without uploading the document.
Split, extract or remove?
| You want toโฆ | Use | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Keep only certain pages, for example 3โ5 | Extract PDF Pages | One new PDF with only those pages |
| Delete a few pages, such as blanks | Remove PDF Pages | The same PDF without those pages |
| Cut a PDF into several parts | Split PDF | Several PDFs, by range, every N pages or one per page |
| Reorder, rotate and delete visually | Organize PDF | One rearranged PDF |
All of these tools run in your browser, so documents stay on your device.
Extract specific pages
- Open Extract PDF Pages and select your PDF.
- Page thumbnails appear. Tap the pages you want, or type a range such as
1, 3-5, 9. - Extract and download. Open the new file and check that it contains exactly the right pages.
Page numbers in the tool refer to the position in the file, which may differ from the numbers printed on the pages (for example if the document starts with a cover). The thumbnails help you avoid mistakes.
Split a PDF into several files
- Open Split PDF and select the file.
- Choose a mode:
- By ranges โ for example 1โ4, 5โ8, 9โ12, to separate documents that were scanned together.
- Every N pages โ for example every 2 pages, to separate two-page forms from a batch scan.
- Single pages โ one PDF per page, useful when a portal wants each certificate as a separate upload.
- Split and download. Multiple files come together in a ZIP archive; on phones, open it with the Files app or use ZIP Extractor.
Remove blank or unwanted pages
Duplex scanning often creates blank back pages, and statements include pages of terms and conditions nobody needs. Open Remove PDF Pages, select the pages to delete and download the cleaned file. Removing pages also makes the file smaller, which helps when a portal has a size limit; see how to compress a PDF to 100 KB or 200 KB.
Practical examples
Sharing only part of a bank statement
Unlock the statement with Unlock PDF using the password from your bank, extract the months you need, and protect the smaller file again before emailing it. Our password protection guide shows how. Sharing less information is the simplest privacy protection.
Separating a batch scan
If you scanned all your family's documents in one go, split them into one file per person or per document type, and name each file clearly. Batch Rename can add consistent names and numbers to many files.
Preparing pages for OCR
OCR is charged per page, so extract only the pages that need text recognition before using tools such as Scanned PDF to Text or PDF to Word (OCR).
Making a PDF from one chapter
Students often need one chapter of a large PDF on their phone. Extract the chapter pages; the smaller file opens faster and is easier to annotate.
Sending a single page on WhatsApp
Sometimes a relative or colleague needs just one page, such as the first page of an insurance policy. Extract it as its own PDF, or convert that page into an image with PDF to JPG so it shows as a picture in the chat and can be viewed without opening a PDF reader.
Doing it on a mobile phone
The tools work in Chrome on Android and Safari on iPhone. Thumbnails make selecting pages by touch easy. For very large PDFs (hundreds of pages or scanned books), a phone may run short of memory; in that case close other apps, or split the document on a computer.
Putting pages back together
Splitting and merging go hand in hand. After extracting the pages you need from several documents, combine them into one file in the right order with Merge PDF. Our guide to merging PDFs on mobile covers ordering and size limits.
Common questions
Does extracting pages reduce quality?
No. The pages are copied as they are, without recompression, so text and images look exactly the same.
Are links and bookmarks kept?
Page content is kept fully. Bookmarks and links that point to removed pages naturally stop working.
Can I extract pages from a password-protected PDF?
You need to unlock it first with the password. The tools do not bypass protection on files you cannot open.
Summary
Extract when you want to keep a few pages, remove when you want to delete a few, split when you need several files, and organize when you need to rearrange visually. Doing it in the browser keeps your documents private and takes less than a minute.
