Tamil OCR Online: How to Convert a Tamil Image to Text Free

Free Tamil OCR online: convert Tamil photos, scans and screenshots to editable Unicode Tamil text. Photo tips and letters to proofread after OCR.

By the Ocr4you Team ·

Retyping Tamil is hard work. Finding each letter on a phone keyboard, remembering where the pulli goes and getting vowel signs such as கொ or கௌ right takes far longer than typing English. If you have a Tamil government order, a school textbook page, a wedding invitation, an old book or a WhatsApp forward saved as an image, Tamil OCR can read the letters for you and give you editable Unicode Tamil text in seconds. This guide explains how to convert a Tamil image to text online for free, how to photograph pages so the result is accurate, and which Tamil letters to check before you use the text.

What is Tamil OCR?

OCR (optical character recognition) looks at the shapes in an image and turns them into characters. Tamil OCR does this for Tamil script (தமிழ்) and outputs standard Unicode text – the same kind of text you get when you type with a Tamil keyboard. That matters because Unicode Tamil works everywhere: in Word, Google Docs, Gmail, WhatsApp, websites and search engines. You can edit it, search it, paste it into a translator or quote it in an assignment.

Ocr4you has a dedicated Tamil Image to Text page. It detects the language automatically and also handles the English words, numbers, dates and phone numbers that commonly appear on Tamil forms, bills and notices.

How to convert a Tamil image to text (step by step)

  1. Open Tamil Image to Text in Chrome, Safari or any modern browser on your phone or computer.
  2. Tap the upload box and select your Tamil photo, screenshot or scan. JPG, PNG, WEBP, TIFF and BMP are supported, and you can add several images at once.
  3. For faded or yellowed pages, turn on the optional gray filter.
  4. Press Extract Text. Processing usually takes under 30 seconds.
  5. Copy the Tamil text, or download it as TXT, Word or PDF from the result page.
  6. Read through the result once against the original image and fix any mistakes (see the checklist below).

If your Tamil document is a multi-page scanned PDF rather than images, use PDF to Text (OCR), or Make PDF Searchable if you only want to search inside the file.

What you can use Tamil OCR for

Government and legal paperwork

Tamil Nadu government orders (G.O.s), circulars, patta and chitta extracts, certificates and court documents are often shared as scanned PDFs or photos. Converting them to text lets you search for a survey number or name, copy a paragraph into a letter or petition, and keep a searchable archive.

Students and teachers

Copy passages from Tamil textbooks, question papers and notes into study material, or prepare worksheets without retyping. Teachers can turn a printed lesson into an editable document and adapt it for their class.

Literature, temple and family records

Old Tamil books, magazines, temple notices and family documents are often only available on paper. OCR is the first step to digitising them so they can be shared, preserved and searched.

Business and daily life

Shop boards, invoices, product labels, wedding invitations and WhatsApp forwards in Tamil can be copied into messages, translated for relatives who do not read Tamil, or entered into a spreadsheet.

How to photograph Tamil pages for better OCR

  • Shoot straight from above. Hold the phone parallel to the page so lines are not slanted. A tilted page is the most common cause of merged or broken words.
  • Use daylight and avoid shadows. Your hand or phone can cast a shadow across the page; move to a window or use a second light source.
  • Fill the frame with the text. Crop away the table, fingers and background with Crop Image. Small Tamil letters with fine vowel signs need enough pixels to be recognised.
  • Flatten thick books. Text near the spine curves. Press the page flat or photograph one page at a time.
  • One column at a time. Newspapers and magazines with several columns are easier to read in the right order if you crop each column separately.
  • Use a scanner app for long documents. Our guide to scanning documents with your phone covers cropping and contrast settings that also help OCR.

Tamil letters to double-check after OCR

Modern OCR is good at Tamil, but some letters look alike, especially in small or blurred print. Proofread these carefully:

Look-alike groupWhy it gets confused
ல / ள / ழSimilar loops; the difference changes the meaning of many words.
ன / ண / நThree "n" sounds with similar shapes in some fonts.
ர / றTwo "r" letters; a faint stroke can turn one into the other.
Pulli (்) on consonantsThe dot is tiny and can disappear on low-resolution images or be confused with a speck of dust.
Vowel signs ொ, ோ, ௌThese wrap around the consonant; if part of the sign is cut off, the vowel may be wrong.

A quick read-through by someone who knows Tamil catches most of these. For names, addresses and numbers, always compare with the original image.

Older books and pre-reform letters

Books printed before the 1978 Tamil script reform use older shapes for letters such as னை and லை. The OCR outputs these as modern Unicode Tamil, which is usually what you want for editing and search. If you are transcribing a historical text and need to note the original spelling, keep the scanned image alongside the text.

Other Indian languages

The same approach works for other scripts. Ocr4you has dedicated pages for Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Bengali, Marathi, Gujarati and Hindi. Our overview of free OCR for Indian languages compares them, and the Hindi OCR tips article has proofreading advice that applies to most Indic scripts.

Privacy

Tamil OCR runs on our server, so the image is uploaded for processing. Before converting land records, ID cards or personal letters, crop out any details you do not need. For Aadhaar or PAN cards in particular, see how to extract text from ID cards safely.

What to do with the Tamil text next

  • Paste it into Word or Google Docs and choose a Unicode Tamil font such as Latha, Nirmala UI or Noto Sans Tamil for a clean look.
  • Paste it into Google Translate if you need an English or Hindi version – remember that machine translation still needs a human check.
  • Save a searchable copy of the original scan with Make PDF Searchable so you can use Ctrl+F later.
  • If the page contains a table, such as a fee list or marks statement, try JPG to Excel to keep the columns.
