Free Tamil OCR: convert a Tamil image to text online

Ocr4you reads Tamil (தமிழ்) text from photos, screenshots and scanned pages and turns it into real, editable Unicode text. Upload a JPG, PNG, WEBP, TIFF or BMP file, click Extract Text, and a few seconds later you can copy the Tamil text or download it as a TXT file. You do not need to install a Tamil keyboard or type anything again. People search for this as "Tamil image to text", "Tamil OCR" or "தமிழ் படத்திலிருந்து உரை", and this page does exactly that.

Who uses Tamil image to text?

Tamil is read and written by millions of people in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Sri Lanka, Singapore and Malaysia. A huge amount of everyday paperwork in Tamil still exists only on paper or as a picture: Tamil Nadu government orders (G.O.), patta and chitta land papers, temple records, school books and literature. Retyping these by hand is slow and full of mistakes, especially when you have to find each Tamil letter on a phone keyboard. With OCR you photograph the page once and get text you can edit, translate, search, quote in an assignment or paste into a WhatsApp message.

How Tamil script is recognised

Tamil has a compact alphabet but uses the pulli (dot) above consonants and several vowel signs that wrap around a letter, such as கொ and கௌ. Older printed books also use pre-reform letter shapes. Our OCR is trained on both modern and older printing so words come out in standard Unicode Tamil.

The engine behind Ocr4you is an AI document text model that detects the language automatically, so you do not have to pick Tamil from a list. It also handles pages that mix Tamil with English words, numbers, dates and phone numbers, which is very common in forms, bills and notices.

How to extract Tamil text from an image

  1. Click the upload box above and choose your Tamil photo or scan. You can add several images at once.
  2. Optionally choose the gray filter for faded or yellowed pages.
  3. Press Extract Text. The OCR runs on our server and usually finishes in under 30 seconds.
  4. Copy the Tamil text, or download it as a TXT, Word or PDF file from the result page.

Tips for better Tamil OCR accuracy

  • Take the photo straight from above in daylight and avoid shadows from your phone or hand.
  • Crop away the table, background and other pages so only the Tamil text is in the frame.
  • Use at least 300 DPI when scanning; small Tamil marks disappear at low resolution.
  • Split very long pages, such as full newspaper sheets, into columns before uploading.
  • For a multi-page Tamil PDF use Scanned PDF to Text, and to get an editable document use Convert to Word.

Is it free and private?

Every visitor gets free OCR pages to start, with no sign-up needed, and you can buy more pages from the pricing page if you process a lot of Tamil documents. Uploaded images are used only to extract the text and are not shared or published. Your result is shown only to you in your browser session.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert a Tamil image to text for free?

Yes. Ocr4you gives free OCR pages to every visitor without sign-up. Upload your Tamil image, click Extract Text and copy the result.

Does the Tamil OCR give Unicode text?

Yes. The output is standard Unicode Tamil (Tamil script), so it works in Word, Google Docs, WhatsApp, email and any website.

Do I need to select Tamil as the language?

No. The OCR detects Tamil automatically, and it also reads English words and numbers mixed into the same page.

Can it read handwritten Tamil?

Neat handwriting in Tamil often works, but printed text gives the best accuracy. For handwriting, use a sharp photo and try our handwriting to text page.

Which file types are supported for Tamil OCR?
