Free Urdu OCR: convert a Urdu image to text online

Ocr4you reads Urdu (اردو) text from photos, screenshots and scanned pages and turns it into real, editable Unicode text. Upload a JPG, PNG, WEBP, TIFF or BMP file, click Extract Text, and a few seconds later you can copy the Urdu text or download it as a TXT file. You do not need to install a Urdu keyboard or type anything again. People search for this as "Urdu image to text", "Urdu OCR" or "اردو تصویر سے متن", and this page does exactly that.

Who uses Urdu image to text?

Urdu is read and written by millions of people in India, Pakistan and Urdu readers worldwide. A huge amount of everyday paperwork in Urdu still exists only on paper or as a picture: Urdu newspapers, poetry (shayari) books, madrasa notes, court papers and old letters. Retyping these by hand is slow and full of mistakes, especially when you have to find each Perso-Arabic (Nastaliq) letter on a phone keyboard. With OCR you photograph the page once and get text you can edit, translate, search, quote in an assignment or paste into a WhatsApp message.

How Perso-Arabic (Nastaliq) script is recognised

Urdu is written right to left, usually in the flowing Nastaliq style where letters slope down and stack on each other. This is one of the hardest scripts for OCR. Our AI engine reads the full word shape and returns proper right-to-left Unicode text, so when you paste it into Word it keeps the correct direction.

The engine behind Ocr4you is an AI document text model that detects the language automatically, so you do not have to pick Urdu from a list. It also handles pages that mix Urdu with English words, numbers, dates and phone numbers, which is very common in forms, bills and notices.

How to extract Urdu text from an image

  1. Click the upload box above and choose your Urdu photo or scan. You can add several images at once.
  2. Optionally choose the gray filter for faded or yellowed pages.
  3. Press Extract Text. The OCR runs on our server and usually finishes in under 30 seconds.
  4. Copy the Urdu text, or download it as a TXT, Word or PDF file from the result page.

Tips for better Urdu OCR accuracy

  • Take the photo straight from above in daylight and avoid shadows from your phone or hand.
  • Crop away the table, background and other pages so only the Urdu text is in the frame.
  • Use at least 300 DPI when scanning; small Perso-Arabic (Nastaliq) marks disappear at low resolution.
  • Split very long pages, such as full newspaper sheets, into columns before uploading.
  • For a multi-page Urdu PDF use Scanned PDF to Text, and to get an editable document use Convert to Word.

Is it free and private?

Every visitor gets free OCR pages to start, with no sign-up needed, and you can buy more pages from the pricing page if you process a lot of Urdu documents. Uploaded images are used only to extract the text and are not shared or published. Your result is shown only to you in your browser session.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert a Urdu image to text for free?

Yes. Ocr4you gives free OCR pages to every visitor without sign-up. Upload your Urdu image, click Extract Text and copy the result.

Does the Urdu OCR give Unicode text?

Yes. The output is standard Unicode Urdu (Perso-Arabic (Nastaliq) script), so it works in Word, Google Docs, WhatsApp, email and any website.

Do I need to select Urdu as the language?

No. The OCR detects Urdu automatically, and it also reads English words and numbers mixed into the same page.

Can it read handwritten Urdu?

Neat handwriting in Urdu often works, but printed text gives the best accuracy. For handwriting, use a sharp photo and try our handwriting to text page.

Which file types are supported for Urdu OCR?

JPG, JPEG, PNG, WEBP, TIFF and BMP images up to 20 MB each. For PDFs use the Scanned PDF to Text tool.
